Heffron
Congratulations to Col Stapleton who won C grade at Heffron on Saturday. He broke away with a couple of laps to go and by all accounts the bunch wasn’t organised enough to work together to chase him down so he ended up first over the line. Unfortunately there was a crash in C grade (none of the Steam riders were involved) which saw 7 or 8 people come down – hopefully a quick recovery for all concerned. Muir finished with the bunch but was a bit shaken after watching the crash happen right next to him.
Randwick Botany’s race report can be found at http://www.randwickbotanycc.com/Results%202005/Results%2030%20April%202005/results_30%20April%202005.htm
They obviously don’t like “triathletes” winning at Heffron !!! How come Steam guys only get one go at winning and other clubs can win D or C grade several times ?
SCC tour
Congratulations to George Tragaris (riding for the opposition) who won every race in his grade on the weekend in Sydney Cycling Club’s tour. Well done George – and that was before he even got on the new bike.
MTB update
Made it into Blinman at 345 yesterday afternoon. 965 kms. If I wasn't buggered, would have done an extra 35 just to round out the 1000.
Yesterdays ride was unbelievable. Started just short of Wilpena pound and travelled all through that area including 20kms of single track into Brachina gorge. But the real highlight was last night. The Mawson trail ends at the blinman pub. After the ride, a few people were a bit thirsty.Just before midnight, one of the many people riding nude on the main street outside the pub fell off (the squeamish should stop reading here) and ripped his scrotum.
It was a 2 hour drive to get medical attention, then 12 stiches!!
So let that be a lesson to all steamers, don't ride drunk and naked in the dark.
Waz

Stats from the long ride.
Total distance 941kms
Total ride time 51 hours 54 minutes
Average speed 18.1 kph
Total ascent 8875m
Total descent 7975
Net ascent 900m
Average heart rate basically just continually declined. This was partly due to lack of endurance and recovery time and also partly due to getting a better idea of the pacing I would need to actually finish the thing.
First 4 days went, 143, 125, 123, 119, then recovered after a rest day to 127, 129, 124 for the next 3 days. By then I was totally cooked and didn’t seem to recover much recording 117, 115, 114 and 114.
But the average speeds went up over time.
Weekend riding
Sat 6:45am from the caravan – crit experience will be focussing on team work and TTT practise this week. There will be an option to do a steady ride with Rod of approx 50-60kms.
Sun 6:15am from the caravan. Faster group will be going through the National Park in at Audley for 105km ride and the steady group will be doing the same.
The Worth of a Cyclist’s Life
There is a protest ride in Sydney this weekend I believe but I’m not sure of the date.
Dear All
There is a very disturbing report on yesterday's www.cyclingnews.com site (see below) about the court case of a South Australian driver who killed a cyclist in a road accident. I feel this needs widespread circulation - apologies if you have already seen the report. I suggest you also check out the media release on the Bicycle Institute of South Australia site at http://www.bisa.asn.au/

Australian cyclists protest light sentence for driver who killed
What's a cyclist's life worth? In South Australia, home of the Tour Down Under, the answer is AU$3100.
That's the fine handed down last month to Eugene McGee, the driver of a 4WD who killed cyclist Ian Humphrey in a hit and run incident in November 2003. McGee, a lawyer and former police prosecutor admitted he had been drinking before the crash and instead of stopping to render assistance he waited four hours before reporting himself to police.
Despite police reports that McGee "smelled of alcohol" when he presented himself, he was not breath tested because regulations require a breath test to be taken within two hours of a crash. At the subsequent District Court trial McGee was found guilty of driving without due care and failing to stop and render assistance. He was acquitted of the more serious charge of causing death by dangerous driving.
The case has led to a huge public outcry in South Australia and South Australian Premier Mike Rann has announced a Royal Commission to investigate the case.
Issues raised by cyclists' rights groups in the vanguard of the outcry include: Why was McGee's alcohol level not tested; why were two independent witness who say they saw McGee driving his 4WD at very high speed - estimated in excess of 160kph - at the time, not called at the trial; and why was McGee merely fined and disqualified from driving for 12 months, when the maximum sentence for failing to stop and render assistance is twelve months in jail?
Announcing the enquiry, Premier Rann said, "I have made my views known about the lack of humanity shown by Eugene McGee, the driver who killed (cyclist) Ian Humphrey and left him for dead on the side of the road." Premier Rann was referring to a previous statement in which he had said McGee showed, "the worst form of cowardice" in not stopping to help Ian Humphrey.
Seemingly lenient treatment by the courts of drivers who kill cyclists is a long-standing concern of Australian cyclists' rights groups, and the McGee case has mobilized protests this weekend in South Australian capital Adelaide and also in Melbourne and Sydney. The protest rides start at 9.30 at Victoria Square, Adelaide; Federation Square, Melbourne and Hyde Park Fountain, Sydney.
