Welcome to this week’s Steam update – I apologise in advance for the less professional update as I am standing in for our regular editor Rob Gorman who is having a 4 week jaunt overseas – please send any updates for the next 4 weeks to ciclismo@tpg.com.au by Tuesday of that week.
Anthony
Freeman
As most of you are aware, Anthony
Freeman had a accident in the park this morning. He was taken to the
Prince of Wales hospital and has a broken collar bone, 4 broken ribs and a
broken pubic bone. On behalf of myself and Kerry, I would like to
thank everybody who helped out this morning and to extend the best wishes of the
club to Anthony and wish him a very speedy recovery. He is currently
in the ICU at Prince of Wales hospital in Randwick. Our coach
Daniele is also OK but has lost a lot of bark and will be very stiff tomorrow.
There will be a squad session as usual tomorrow morning at
6:45am.
This week’s results
Cycling
Congratulations to George Tragaris for winning D grade at Heffron last week. Don’t do it too often or you might have to go up a grade !! And very well done to Pete Galvin for holding onto 6th in C grade in his first race back at Heffron.
MTB
A few very foolhardy Steamers took part in the 50/100km mountain bike race held near Wiseman’s Ferry on Sunday. Full results at http://www.maxadventure.com.au/dirtworksclassic/results.htm and below are how the Steam train went :
Overall place Category Place Time Name
49 11 04:35:08 Muir Mathieson (HALF)
50 3 04:38:02 Larry Brittan (HALF)
101 6 06:43:31 Maria Papadopoulos (FULL)
122 36 07:03:21 Paul Angel (FULL)
180 54 07:59:26 Warren Lee (FULL)
Below is Warren’s race report :-
“When I got home, Erica said I looked like I had spent 5 years in a Turkish prison.
If anyone thinks doing a 100km mtb race with 1500m of vertical when you have owned a mountain bike for 3 weeks is a good idea they are on drugs.
I can’t tell you the most horrible gradients as I was carrying the bike most of the time so it wasn’t capturing distance.
This sport should be called mountain bike carrying. I even had to carry it downhill.
A highlight was seeing a guy with the ragged remnants of his collar bone sticking through his skin. Not happy Jan. And some of the hallucinations on the last lap were also kind of cool. (BTW, the busted guy was not a hallucination and I rode back up trail to get help).
Average HR was 155 for 8 hours. I drank 10 litres of water. It was like my head was`leaking.
But I’ll do it again next year.”
Weekend rides
There will be crit experience on again at 6:45am on Saturday morning leaving from the caravan in the middle of the park. Rod will also captain a steady 50km ride for those that are interested.
Some Steam members will be racing at Heffron in the afternoon – please let Daniele know if you are interested in coming to race or to watch. We ride down there from the York Road gates.
On Sunday, there will be two rides going out at 6:15am from the coffee van in the middle of the park. Both rides will be going through the National Park in at Waterfall and out at Audley. Daniele may not be captaining a faster ride but someone will be and Rod will be taking a steadier ride.
Forster
Welcome back to all our returned Ironmen and women. Rob Gorman has put his photos up on the Steam website http://www.steamsports.org/ for everyone to have a look at. And thanks to James Fenner an HIV project in Tanzania this year gains $42,000 – James raised $10,500 from doing Ironman and with the government injection this became $42,000. Well done.
Club Champs
The NSW Club Championships is on again at Port Stephens on 7th May. Please see attached document on how to enter. It would be good to see as many entrants as possible racing in the Steam colours this year.

THE DASHER DOUBLE
