Gunning TTT weekend

Steam put on a good showing in our distinctive orange at the weekend - with many members, old time racers and those new to racing, making the trip to Gunning to make up the teams.     Luckily it dawned fine on the day, after we all had a great carbo loading feast made by Mark and the boys the night before, and it did briefly warm up before the wind came up.    Not much to recommend as far as Gunning goes, however Gary did tell me that the lone coffee shop actually made a good coffee.  Luckily for Peloton and Steam members, we had our very own Saeco coffee machine in the tent along with as much race food and drink as you could need.
The Steam teams all performed very creditably with the girls taking out a silver.    Unfortunately one of our team members had a bad cold and for some reason suffered on the downhill with a tailwind and came good on the uphill into a ferocious head wind.   Work that one out.   Special mention has to go to the elite boys who put in a great effort in  their 80km time trial.  Johnny "the Shoe" Chuo hung on for dear life as Ben and Pete G motored on through.    The elite field is highly competitive and is usually taken out by the pro or semi pro elite men - well done to our boys for having a great go.
And the other teams did their best on a very windy day on an undulating course - all agreeing that we could do with some more team time trialling practice as it's not nearly so easy as the Discovery Channel team makes it look in the Tour.    Congratulations to everyone for taking part and thanks to everyone who turned up and raced for the club.    We are already planning next year's event.   Special thanks must go to Mark Rowling from Turramurra Cyclery and his handy helpers for putting together a great dinner, breakfast and mechanical support as well as BBQ on race day.   Most of us felt like pro riders with the all the support available.

Club membership renewals

Steam annual membership is up for renewal again so please get your forms into us as soon as possible.  Unfortunately there is a price increase this year from $30 to $40 – we have kept the price down since Brett founded the club in 1997 but due to increased insurance costs we now need to raise it.    The 3 year option is now priced at $110.   Please give your forms to the coaches or post to the PO Box.  All cheques should be made payable to Steam Sports Inc. The form is available on web www.steamsports.org

Mudgee Marathon Weekend on Aug 20/21.

The Marathon & Half Marathon will be held on Sunday, Aug 21 while the 5km Fun Run is on the Saturday. Though the run is a bit undulating (OK,OK; so there are some hills), the friendly, relaxed atmosphere and small number of entrants (usually under 100) makes it a memorable run for the first timer or for those who prefer a more personal experience.

For those interested, more info can be found at http://mudgeetriclub.hwy.com.au/marathon

If you need any more info, please let me know. Thanks!

Kind Regards, Lynn Byrne

Tri For A Wish - Brad Hector

My name is Brad Hector and I am a university student and amateur triathlete at Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga. In December and January of this year, i will be undertaking and event called Tri For A Wish, which is a triathlon to be completed solo by myself involving a swim from Rottnest Island to Perth, cycling from Perth to Melbourne and running from Melbourne to Sydney within 40 days to raise much needed funds for the Starlight Foundation.

This year over 600,000 children are expected to be hospitalised across Australia, and the Starlight Foundation aims to reach every one of these children. Unfortunatley their resources only allow them to reach approximately 200,000 children, or less than one-in-three. The Starlight Foundation receives no government funding and only receives funds from the genorosity of the community and events such as Tri For A Wish. The aim of Tri For A Wish is to raise the $5,000 required to grant a wish for a seriously ill child. Currently there are over 500 children on the waiting list for this once in a lifetime opportunity.

I am hoping that you can circulate the attached information sheet or this email amongst your triathlon clubs members, or perhaps include a brief description of the event and the website in a club newsletter or similar as I expect the most generous support to come from the triathlon community.

I am also interested in accomodating people who may wish to accompany me for a day of the event either on their bike or on foot. Although there are no guidelines set for this as yet, I would be interested in hearing expressions of interest to determine whether people would be interested in participating. Tri For A Wish also provides sponsorship opportunities to all sizes of business so if you have any business contacts you think may be interested in a sponsorship opportunity, please contact me so that a sponsorship proposal can be forwarded.

Please do not hesitate to contact me directly on 0425 287 094, or via return email if you would like to discuss Tri For A Wish.

Yours in sport

Brad Hector
