Hi Everyone

MS Walk and Fun Run

I am writing to encourage you to support me in my endeavour to raise money for the MS Society.  I am participating in the annual MS Walk and Fun Run which is on Sunday 5th June.  Although it is only an 8km run (which I am sure I will be able to complete quite comfortably, but maybe not too fast), the main reason I am planning to run is to raise money for the MS Society.

Why the MS Society?

Recently my family has been touched with MS and I feel that I would like to contribute to their organization on some small way, with your support.  I am, as an athlete, in a very privileged position and am asking for your financial assistance in this matter.

What is MS?

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease that randomly attacks the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord).   It is the most common neurological condition that affects young people, usually from the ages of 20-40 years and is more prevalent in women.  In sufferers of MS, the body’s immune system, that normally defends the body from attack by viruses or bacteria, turns on itself and attacks its own myelin which causes disruption to the nerve transmission.  Myelin is the protective sheath which is wrapped around the nerve fibres in the central nervous system.

There is no known cause of MS, but once the myelin sheath has been attacked and destroyed, the damage is permanent and a scar forms.  Often these scars completely block nerve impulses.  This can be compared to a loss of insulating material around an electrical wire which interferes with the transmission of signals.

The disease is called multiple because the damage usually occurs at a number of points and sclerosis, from the Greek for “scar”.

What your help means

As there is no known cure for MS, your support will contribute to ongoing research for a cure and also for the prevention and treatment of MS.  Your support will also contribute to the services and facilities for those living with MS.  However, perhaps the best advantage would be knowing that you are supporting me to help raise money and awareness of the condition.  I feel extremely privileged and very fortunate to lead the life which I do.  I would greatly appreciate it if you could support the MS Society.

Note that donations of over $2 are fully tax deductible.  Cheques should be made out to the MS Society of NSW but can be sent to me.

The fun run and walk is open to everyone so I encourage you all to participate in the fun run (8km) or walk (9km or 16km).  Details can be obtained at www.walkforms.org.au

Thank you very much

Cheers, Melissa Ashton

Max Adventure

Hello we are an events company producing Adventure & Multi Sport Races in Sydney. These events would provide excellent cross training for your tri club members throughout the colder months.

The Adventure races involve running through the bush, mountain biking [nothing too technical], kayaking [boats are supplied] and navigation.  On the 26th June we will be running an adventure sprint race in the Royal National Park. This race format is a linear course with the fastest teams taking the shortest amount of time to complete the course. Most teams of two finish in around 3-6 hrs. Triathletes would have the advantage of excellent fitness skills required to complete the event. Check the website for further details: www.maxadventure.com.au

The Multi Sport Race will be based in Ku-Ring-gai National Park starting at Akuna bay and finishing in Bobbin Head Picnic Area. It will consist of 30km road ride, 12km flat-water paddle and 10km trail run. Categories include solo, pairs and relay teams. Check the event website for further details: www.maxadventure.com.au/multisport/
