Committee

Looking for two people out of our 150 odd membership to stand as general committee members from Sept 2005 to Sept 2006.   We generally have 4 committee meetings a year to discuss various issues with the club and organise activities.   You will be required to donate a little bit of time and action any activities that you volunteer to help with.   We also have a bit of fun and usually manage to get through a couple of bottles of bubbly as well.

New committee will start after the AGM this year on 9th October.     Please email Anna on ciclismo@tpg.com.au or Rob Gorman on r.Gorman@unsw.edu.au if you have some time and energy this year to spare for your cycling and triathlon club.

DANIELE: CORNERING 10 TIPS

Cornering is one of the most difficult aspects of bike riding. It’s easy enough when you’re going slow, but when up to speed cornering becomes more difficult. Add wet roads and bad surfaces into the mix and you have a recipe for disaster. Here are 10 ways of getting your way around a corner Safely & fast.

1. Brake in time: When you know a corner is approaching, brake in plenty of time. Your biggest cornering problem is approaching far too fast and locking up the brakes in a moment of panic! Take your time and brake early.

2. Cornering is often a lot easier in the drop position on your handlebars. You have easier access to your brakes, the arms become more relaxed (keep them bent) and you are more likely to shift your weight back over the back wheel.

3. As you approach the corner, just check for movement of traffic or other riders around you. If you haven’t been through this corner before the speed sign may indicate how fast they recommend a car should go through the corner say 15km will mean it’s a tight one. Although you know what you’re doing, others around you may not. If you are confident it’s all clear then move out towards to the middle of the road .A wide entry will allow you to carry more corner speed & still use the apex on the inside. This will dramatically improve your cornering angle and give you more width to negotiate the corner. The tighter your cornering angle the more difficult cornering becomes.

4. Change to a lower gear just before the corner. This should be a gear that you can comfortably exit the corner on. It’s no good approaching a corner on 53x15, forgetting to change gear and then stalling as you accelerate out of the corner. Think ahead.

5. As you are just coming into the corner pick your head up and look through the corner. Don’t look down towards your front wheel. Think of car driving – you don’t stare just in front of your bonnet, you look ahead at where you want to be going. Use this same principle when cornering on your bike.

6. When you are a few metres away from the corner lift up the inside leg (the leg on the corner side!) so the pedal is at 12 o’clock. This will do two things. It will improve your balance whilst cornering and stop you from hitting your pedal on the road.

7. Distribute your weight so that it pushes down through your outside leg, this helps balance and improves tyre grip.

8. Once you are cornering try not to touch your brakes. By braking on the corner itself you will ruin your cornering line and end up with further problems. All the braking should have been done before the corner, allowing you to smoothly freewheel the full way round.

9. On the exit of the corner try not to straighten the bike up to soon. Stay in your cornering position until you have fully negotiated the corner. Don’t try to pedal too soon or you’ll simply whack your pedal on the road!

10. Accelerate! Once are out of the corner and the road straightens, then put the power down.

Corner safe e ciao

Cycle lesson 1 from Manhattan - two spare tubes are never enough.
Whilst my bike only arrived just over two weeks ago, every ride I've done I've ended up with either one or two punctures.  I've got a few bike shops nearby thankfully, and I'm seriously considering taking half a dozen tubes with me next time I go out.  Daniele and Rob will be pleased to know that I'm now a wizz at changing tubes.  I chickened out on a road cycle today and went to the gym instead for a cycle session - better get used to this option as winter is approaching.  If anything has made me homesick - Daniele's email about 'Out of Hidernation' has done it - light early mornings, good temperature - the reverse is starting to happen here.

I joined New York City Cycle Club today and hopefully will start training with them on Tues and Thurs mornings in the Park so it will be interesting to see how they train.

Anyways, thought I'd drop a line to say high and to say that cycling in Manhattan - hmmm......I want some HILLS!!!!!!!!!

Finally, a pic I think we will all appreciate seeing as how it's nice and prominent on our jersey's!  Found this at Columbus Circle which is at the end of my street.

Happy riding,
Shawn

Park and Police

The rangers and police seem to be increasing their prescence in the park lately. Make sure that you obey park rules at all times, but especially when you see them patrolling. Do not overtake a ranger or police car at 40 km/hr! They can and will fine you. Please report all incidents with the rangers to us at STEAM and if appropriate make complaints to Centennial Park in writing.
