Triple Triathlon

There's a group of us taking part in the triple triathlon in Canberra on 20 November. One team is missing a person to do the 40 mountain bike leg in the second triathlon. I am doing it for another team (I don't know why I have not been on my mountain bike for 2 years!). I was wondering if there is anyone in the club who would like to drive to Canberra and have 'fun' for 40 k's.

STEAM California

Lisa and I are moving to the US in November, so will have to enjoy hearing about STEAM from the updates. STEAM has been a large part of our lives for the last 6 years and has given us some fabulous times and fantastic friends. We will miss everyone very much and look forward to seeing you on return trips or when you venture to California - and when we return in the future to settle down next to Queens Park. This will be my last update, but we will look forward to hearing what is happening in Centennial Park each week.

Xmas festivities

Steam Christmas weekend is in the planning phase.   We have going to run the Hamill cup on Sat 17th December at the Botany container terminals.  The handicapping is going to be very competitive so start picking your teams now.   Teams must contain at least 1 female and ages must add up to 125 otherwise stiff time penalties will be incurred.   There will be time bonuses for ages that are more than 125.   Start training in your teams now for the 7 lap TTT of the container terminals.

We will have our Christmas ride on Sunday 18th December followed by our usual champagne and muffins at the coffee van afterwards and then the Steam Christmas party in the afternoon with fun and games and awards for all.

Put these dates in your diary.

Coaches Corner

Don't neglect your neck. Even Lance Armstrong see below!

Despite daily massages and even chiropractic adjustments, pros can routinely be seen stretching on their bikes during long road races or Tour stages. I  recall one shot of Lance this year twisting around like he had a bee in his jersey.

Avoiding stiffness is a key to comfort on any ride. But one body part that's easy to neglect is your neck -- until you actually need to turn your head. Then you notice how tight it's become. Once you let your neck reach this point, it may feel stiff for the rest of the ride.

A tight neck is always a possibility when your body is locked in the road-cycling posture with your head titled straight back. Here are 4 tips to defuse the tension (and reduce discomfort in your shoulders as well):

---Look around. Instead of taking in roadside sights mainly by moving your eyes, make it a habit to turn your head left or right. Occasionally turn far enough to make your chin touch your shoulder. When stopped of course!

---Pivot your head up and down. When the road is clear, lower your chin to your chest for 2 seconds, then hunch your shoulders and tilt your head back for 2 more. Tightening and then relaxing neck muscles works great to relieve tension.

---Tilt your head side to side. Touch your right shoulder with your right ear, then your left shoulder with your left ear. Pause at each extension for a couple of seconds.

---Angle your head. During normal riding, hold your head slightly to the left of center for a short while, then to the right, then back to the left, and so on. The idea is to stay out of the straight-ahead notch.

Tip!  Remember if you’ve just started riding your body needs time to adapt to the riding postion give yourself a couple of months or so. If you are still frequently bothered by a sore neck while riding and these remedies don't help, check your position on the bike. The handlebar may be too low in relation to the saddle, making you crane your neck to see ahead. At the other extreme, sore trapezius muscles at the base of the neck can result when the handlebar is too close, causing shoulders to hunch.

Good luck to everyone competing in the Port Macquarie  Half Iron Man this weekend including, Kerry Freeman, Marlies Laaper , Keith White , Lecia Ison, Ben Howard & also Pete Galvin racing in the Peloton Sports open crit at Homebush this weekend.
