Ben Kersten’s Speed Record Attempt

Don't neglect your neck. Even Lance
Armstrong see below!
Despite
daily massages and even chiropractic adjustments, pros can routinely be seen
stretching on their bikes during long road races or Tour stages. I recall one shot of Lance this year
twisting around like he had a bee in his jersey.
Avoiding stiffness is a key to comfort on any ride. But one body part that's easy to neglect is your neck -- until you actually need to turn your head. Then you notice how tight it's become. Once you let your neck reach this point, it may feel stiff for the rest of the ride.
A tight
neck is always a possibility when your body is locked in the road-cycling
posture with your head titled straight back. Here are 4 tips to defuse the
tension (and reduce discomfort in your shoulders as
well):
---Look
around. Instead of taking in
roadside sights mainly by moving your eyes, make it a habit to turn your head
left or right. Occasionally turn far enough to make your chin touch your
shoulder. When stopped of course!
---Pivot your
head up and down. When the road is
clear, lower your chin to your chest for 2 seconds, then hunch your shoulders
and tilt your head back for 2 more. Tightening and then relaxing neck muscles
works great to relieve tension.
---Tilt your head
side to side. Touch your right
shoulder with your right ear, then your left shoulder with your left ear. Pause
at each extension for a couple of seconds.
---Angle your
head. During normal riding,
hold your head slightly to the left of center for a short while, then to the
right, then back to the left, and so on. The idea is to stay out of the
straight-ahead notch.
Tip! Remember if
you’ve just started riding your body needs time to adapt to the riding postion
give yourself a couple of months or so. If you are still frequently bothered by
a sore neck while riding and these remedies don't help, check your position on
the bike. The handlebar may be too low in relation to the saddle, making you
crane your neck to see ahead. At the other extreme, sore trapezius muscles at
the base of the neck can result when the handlebar is too close, causing
shoulders to hunch.
Good luck to everyone competing in the Port
Macquarie Half Iron Man this
weekend including,
