Well done to new member, Brendan Garard who joins Mel in qualifying for Forster.

Criteriums

Saturday at Heffron 8/1/05 Muir Mathieson - 4th in Dgrade.

Tuesday at Eastern Creek Dragstrip 11/01/05 Muir Mathieson - 1st in Dgrade & Peter Galvin did some pretty brave attacks & managed to stay in the bunch at the finish good result for the first time in B grade.

Weekend rides

Crit experience will be on as usual starting at 6:45am from the coffee van in the middle of the park.  Distance approx 50-60kms and back by 9am latest.

There will be two rides going out on the weekend.  The faster group will be going to Stanwell Tops and return (120kms) and the a steadier ride will be going down to Waterfall and back (90kms).

Date for Feb

There will be a Steam weekend away in Feb down in Gerroa (many thanks to Alex Hamill for the accommodation) on 12th/13th.  The ride down is approx 165kms and will leave the park early on Sat morning.   All the details are yet to be finalised but if you are interested in a longer ride either for Ironman or other races – put this date in your diary.   Numbers will probably be limited to about 20 due to size of accommodation so get in early.   Accommodation is right on the beach so there will be ample opportunity for some swim sessions for those keen Ironmen/women amongst us.   And on the Sunday either a recovery ride or run before travelling back to Sydney. Email Anna at ciclismo@tpg.com.au if you would like to come.

STEAM at Sri Chinmoy
The Sri Chinmoy Tri festival in Canberra on 5th and 6th March is a huge weekend with events to suit everyone in STEAM. There are off-road triathlons, sprint, olympic and long course events, all of which can be entered as teams. We would like to get a STEAM contingent to venture to Canberra for these races so please email me if you are interested in taking part. We will try to join our cyclists, runners and swimmers together into teams. Get in early to get the pick of people willing to swim (otherwise you might get stuck with a non-swimmer, eg. me).

STEAM donations

Thanks to all who contributed to our collection for the Tsunami appeal this week. At last count we had well over $1000 dollars to donate.

Some of you may not be aware that one of the aims of STEAM is to support charities from our coaching fees. Last year we gave money to two groups helping young people, East Sydney High School and Youth Insearch. Below are letters of thanks from these organisations.

East Sydney High School is a small, community-based independent school which caters for students who have experienced difficulty in mainstream education for a variety of reasons.

Youth Insearch is about "empowering young people to take control of their lives by giving them the opportunity and skills to develop their self esteem and play a positive role in society".

Dear Steam,

Thank you for your recent donation of $1000 which we have used as sporting scholarships for some talented students.

One student in particular was able to buy sporting appropriate gear, become a financial member of the governing basketball association, enabling him to try out in a recent selection process.

We are pleased to let you know that he was successful in his endeavour and is now a member of the 'Sydney Comets' who are the feeder squad to the 'Sydney Kings'.

He is also currently coaching one of their junior development squads. It was with the generous assistance of Steam members that this student was able to pursue his sporting passion while, at the same time earning money from it.

We believe that this is a fantastic outcome for this student and we thank all Steam members.

Regards, Colin Harris, pp Staff Team www.eshigh.com

Dear Anna,

I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank you for your generous support of Youth Insearch.

We continue to have an incredible demand placed on our services and strive to increase the number of weekend camps we conduct.

Your generous donation will make it possible for young people to participate in a Youth Insearch Camp and consequent follow up Support Groups.

Once again many thanks for providing the opportunity for young people to re-build their lives and become positive contributors to society.

Yours sincerely, Paul Simpson, Fundraising Development
