Easter Weekend at Jindabyne Number 2

For those of you who don't know Kerry and Anthony have a ski lodge overlooking Lake Jindabyne. It is a truly beautiful setting to spend time in. Now, if they could only add a house at Bowral to their investment portfolio Steam Cycling would be all set for accommodation on rides away. Unfortunately Kerry and Anthony couldn't be there this year and both were sadly missed. The rest of us however still managed to have a great time.

We began the weekend with 24 people and finished with 21. Rod was only able to get away for 2 days before having to return to put out the recycling. Tim's (Huffy) bike got the death wobbles on the Dalgetty escarpment descent. I reckon he will be in the market for a new bike pretty soon so if you can offer him a 'bargain' get in now. He's what's know as 'motivated' (given that his life flashed before him). Tim's mate Nick rode well on day one but looked decidedly pale after that. And so they left leaving us with more room, more food and more wine.

And so the group coalesced.

The mornings began with Marcus the barista satisfying every caffeine need, from short blacks (me) to double decaffe light soy lattes half water no froth with lemon on the side (Breeda) and everything in between. Seriously though if you ever want too and I hesitate to use the word ....... ingratiate yourself with a bunch of cyclists bring an espresso machine. They're such 'coffee pigs'.

Which brings me to 'Bacon Busters' the magazine of feral pig huntin' Australia. The existence of the magazine was disputed, the content was denied, the buying public was ridiculed. The magazine's stars were mocked. But all this turned to open hilarity when 'Bacon Busters' Number 14 landed at the 'Piste Haus'. Let's hope there's no conflict of dates between the next major cycling weekend and the 'Hog and Dog'. A weekend of shootin', open savagery and excessive alcohol consumption.

Which leads me flawlessly into the amount of alcohol consumed over the weekend. Fortunately I was a model of restraint (Marcus's words not mine, what did I tell you about ingratiating?). However being Easter and being Jindabyne and being that it was thought most things would be shut, there was some panic buying. The likes of which haven't been seen since the collapse of the former Soviet Union.

This frenzy lead to some pretty fuzzy heads, culminating in Lisa not knowing she was in the big gear going up Charlotte's Pass. Yvoine rock climbing, under the table. Anna claiming that Dalgetty was 'flat' Michael asking, "Who is Eddy Mercyx"? Chocolate being won and stolen and returned and stolen again. And finally to me not being able to open a door. Well ok, not 'a' door 'the' door to my room

The recovery ride was beautiful, counting every click on the way out and flying on the way back. The weekend was beautiful, the people were,.... interesting. The music was varied, from the cool inner city rhythms of Moorcheba (good)to the squad's singing of the karaoke classic Bohemian Rhapsody(Hmm). The lake was freezing, the quotes were quotable and we rode and rode and rode, through gale force winds (Charlotte's Pass) and sunny days (the rest of the time.)

It was a fly free (not like Frank's camp) fantastic, memorable weekend away. Make sure you don't miss it next time.

Salaam, Col
