Subject: STEAM Xmas Party

XMAS is nearly here …

Remember the Steam Xmas festivities are almost upon us …. We would like to see you all out on the Steam Christmas ride on Sunday 19th December in the Steam gear with some Christmassy decorations on your bike.   The ride will be down to Waterfall and back.

And in the afternoon (3pm)  – we have our annual Xmas party at the Bronte RSL in Macpherson St.  There will be a separate email with full details.

Club Member Award

And for the first time, we would like the club members to nominate some of their fellow members for the Club Member Award – to be presented at the Xmas party.     The criteria for this is anyone who you feel has been consistently training and/or racing well this year or who has contributed significantly to the club.   It is up to you, the membership, to vote for the “People’s Choice” !!   There are two categories – one for male and one for female. Send your votes to Rob r.gorman@unsw.edu.au or Anna  ciclismo@tpg.com.au. We would like everyone to give this some thought and send in your votes.

SAFETY FIRST!!!  Daniele's tips...

Remember we all love our sunday rides out of the park so lets make them as safe as possible look out for fellow club members, call all hazards ahead

example: cars, rubbish ,sticks, lights & anything esle that may affect riders that are behind you or in front of you.Our club takes pride in knowing we ride safer than any other club out there so lets ride safe & look after one another.

As we are moving into the hotter months there is a lot of temptation to ride in sleeveless tops or singletsThese are great for triathlons & even out your sun tan lines but I don't recommend wearing these when riding in a bunch. IF you are involved in  an accident chances are you will lose more skin than if you wore a normal jersey. I would only wear a sleeveless top if I was riding by myself. In summer I also always wear an under shirt because not only does this soak up sweat better than the jersey but it acts as another protective layer.

Also I'm glad to here Lisa Springer is on the mend & is already talking about her next ride so get well soon Lisa from everyone.

Anna’s view of the NZ trip

Please talk to other people on the trip for a full unbiased version of what it is like to visit NZ … however, this is a quick summary of my trip.

Day 1 : Travelled for 14 hours, ate very little, drank very little and went to bed at midnight after putting bikes together.

Day 2 : Got up at 4am Sydney time, 0 deg at start, never warmed up, found out NZ does not have tailwinds (apparently this is meteorogically possible), was prised off my bike in a state of semi-hypothermia, got a migraine for the rest of the day which is a blur.  Remember that Daniele and Lance separately at the same time reversed brand new car and work van into tree. Only difference was Daniele brought the tree down.  Took more Panadol.

Day 3 : Felt better after some sleep and two coffees (perhaps migraine was caused by caffeine withdrawal) and did not need so many Panadol.   Travelled to the “bach” on Lake near Rotorua – sun actually came out.   Resisted several attempts on my life due to boat sinking and resigned myself to the fact that I may be spending the night in a thermal pool somewhere in the middle of a Lake which was 300m deep and 8deg max.   Was eaten alive by small black flying things (after Kiwis assured me there was nothing dangerous in NZ) – eventually rescued by pissed Kiwis who threatened to throw us off boat after Kerry Freeman started taunting them about Wallaby/All Black stuff.   Lance Andrews repaid debt from 2003 Italia trip and spent some of the night in fishnet stockings (please see Julie Avakian for full story) – he did not look that good.  Drank loads at pleasant BBQ then was almost run over and smashed both shins on concrete culvert which was invisible in total darkness.  Decided that I should leave NZ before anything worse happened to me – couldn’t sleep due to total pain of shins and felt like complete dill.

Day 4 : Wind was causing trees to be horizontal all day – rained all day – took forever to get back to Auckland (Lance estimated 2.5 hours and it took over 4) – panicking about missing plane.  Got on plane – heaved sigh of relief.

I would like to thank Lance Andrews (the Auckland chapter) for his hospitality for the weekend – I have the utmost respect for Kiwi bike riders and believe that you are all insane.

Regards,

Anna Murray
