Steam’s first Heffron race
Randwick Botany met the “Steam train” last Sat as the crew rocked up, fresh from their intensive training at crit experience for the last few months, to challenge all comers in D grade. It was a sea of orange and the organisers were a bit concerned about burglars – then it turned out that they were just very anxious about which grade Daniele was racing in. When they found out it was A grade, (not D) they settled down a bit. Anyway, after 10 laps the train picked up speed and the major burglar of the day (Marco “Petacchi” Corrent, who didn’t do a stroke of work on the front typical Italian style) won the sprint by a few metres and look at the awesome sprinting style. Warren, who was the terrier of the day and chased down anything that looked like it might be getting away, scored second and Peter Galvin made up third. Of course mention must go to the worthy domestiques without whom this would not have been possible – myself, Rowan and Rod who all did a fair bit of work on the front on a very windy day. Due to the testosterone factor on the day, the boys forgot that I was supposed to be Lance so I had to content myself with a reasonable 6th (or 7th) and Rowan got 5th (I think). It’s hard to tell back in the bunch !!! Then we sat back to watch our coach suffer in A grade – 20 starters, break of 5 which became 4 near the end, and a chase group of 5 including Daniele which became 2. So basically out of 20 starters 6 finished – everyone else gave up. And there was also carnage in B and C grade.
Congratulations to everyone that turned up and had a go. See you next time. Anna
