Ride safety

As summer approaches, there are increasing numbers of cyclists on the ride and increasing numbers of irritated motorists.   The Steam Sunday ride had an unfortunate encounter with one of those on Sunday morning.  I reported this to Sutherland police station as the lady driver was clearly in the wrong and driving deliberately dangerously and endangering the bunch.  However, as cyclists, we ourselves must be above reproach and this means obeying all road rules - not behaving aggressively or provocatively towards motorists however much they provoke you.   This means not going through red lights - behaving courteously towards all other road users and remembering that we are usually the slowest vehicle on the road and we should let faster vehicles pass when safe to do so at all times.

Having said all this, I would encourage you to report all incidents of dangerous driving and abuse that you may have the misfortune to encounter.   I think it's time that the police and others realised the real statistics out there - nothing will happen unless we let the correct authorities know.  eg the police on the road and the Centennial Trust for incidents in the park.

Thanks, Anna (coach and President)
