Ironman Canada

Congratulations to Justin Granger who has qualified in Canada. It was dramatic but he did it - having to walk the last 3 kms with stomach cramps and a dodgy ankle. He finished 15th male pro from a field of 33. With many ahead of him already qualified or not wanting the Hawaii thrill he automatically qualified this morning. He gets to race pro for the first time in Hawaii having raced age group in 1996 and 1997.

Oxfam 100km Trailwalker

Congratulations to the Trailwalkers from STEAM who competed in 3 teams: 146 - "We Are Thai" - Julie Avakian, Michael Avakian, Anne Newman, Malcolm Henderson; 252 "O'Connor", Tom O'Connor, Paula Wylie, Brenda Hamill, and Robert Middledorp; and team 401 "Carlton Draught Big Canoes", Bianca van Woesik, Phil Thomson de Zylva, John Murphy and Stuart Webster. The event started with a warmer than expected day resulting in dehydration for Paula who had to pull out at 50 km, and Phil who completed the course, but "wasn't feeling the best". A great effort to get 8th complete team, 2nd mixed team for Carlton Draught Big Canoes; and 41st complete team, 6th over 40 team for We Are Thai; and 216th team for O'Connor. There were 380 teams of 4 started! Bike Box Initiative kringas@ozemail.com.au

Travelling to compete in far away places can be complicated by the difficulties with transporting bicycles safely on aircraft.  The obvious solution is a hard case bike box but, up to now, these have been very expensive in Australia and many find it difficult to justify the cost given the relatively infrequent use.

I would like to announce an initiative designed to solve this problem.  I have identified the biggest selling hard case bike box in Europe and have arranged for an initial container load to be shipped to Australia and sold directly to clubs in quantities of five or more for $450 each.  This price is lower than the retail price in the UK (GBP 195) and includes GST (delivery charges from the Sydney warehouse are additional).  Its external dimensions are 1180 (base) x 730 (top) x 850 x 275mm with a net weight of 9.4kg.

The box (pictured here) is made of ABS plastic and comes with two wheel covers, spare bike box wheels and a two-year manufacturer’s warranty.  More information is available on the manufacturer’s web site (B&W International).

The price breaks are as follows:

Order Quantity

Price (incl. GST, excl. delivery)

5 or more

$450

4

$480

3

$510

2

$540

1

$570

Freight charges from the Sydney warehouse are still being negotiated with various carriers and will be advised as soon as possible.  Alternatively, pick up can be arranged.

I am partnering with the exclusive licensee of B&W’s products in Australia, PB Baumann Tools Australia.  As the name suggests, this company’s core business is hand tools but management is keen to break into this market and will be handling all of the logistics and invoicing (including processing Visa, Mastercard and Bankcard payments).

Note that these bike boxes will be available in Australia from 1 November 2004.

Yours sincerely
