Ironman World Champs, Kona, Hawaii

Congratulations to Belinda Granger on an awesome 7th place. And congratulations also to Justin Granger, Scott Doble and Jon Papalia.

In a nutshell it was described as the worst day on the Big Island since 1986 with the winds crucifying everyone's bike times and hospitalising several age groupers who went flying instead of riding on the road to Hawi. Belinda's swim time was 59 minutes reflecting choppier than usual conditions (always a bad sign for what lies install on the Queen K) and was unfortunate enough to incur a drafting penalty on what otherwise was a commanding bike leg - 3rd fastest women's bike overall. Once again she produced a run time similar to her marathon time at Forster (an incredible feat given the heat and much tougher bike) and she finished 3 places higher than last year's result: 7th overall.

Justin's last journey was in 1997 which was another year where the winds destroyed many bike legs on the entire home journey from Hawi. This year Jusi started the race carrying a calf injury and really the intention was to just get to that damn finish line and enjoy the experience. He was last seen trotting down Alii Drive at about 5:45pm Hawaii time last Saturday afternoon with a big smile on his face. Well done Jusi.

Overall the race was dominated by Normann Stadler and Nina Kraft: two Germans who won the race through commanding bike legs that left the rest of the field floundering for the minor places. The pick of the Australian men: Chris McCormack and Luke Bell both failed to finish with Luke Bell withdrawn for medical reasons on the bike and Macca exiting stage left between the 12mile and 13 mile marker on the run. Mitch Anderson finished 11th overall (30 seconds out of the prize money) and a resurgent Chris Legh finished in 9:48 (61st overall ). Of the Australian women it was really a race between Lake Placid winner Kate Major and our own Belinda Granger. Belinda lead out of the swim and off the bike. There was work to do after the 4minute stand down chasing Kate Major which was helped by Kate receiveing a 4minute stand down herself for outside assistance on the run. With Belinda closing to almost 30 seconds before the turn into the Energy Lag (18 miles on the run) Kate kicked away running 3:17 to take 4th place overall and is now the highest placed Australian woman at Hawaii (overtaking Jan Wanklyn).
